Phone Overheating: Normal Causes and When It's a Fault

A phone getting a little warm is completely normal: there’s a processor, a battery and a radio working in a very small space. The real question is when it heats up and how much. Getting warm while gaming in summer is not the same as burning hot while switched off on the table.

Normal heat: don’t worry

It’s expected for a phone to get warm when:

  • It’s charging, especially with fast or wireless charging. Charging generates heat in the battery and the charging circuit.
  • You’re gaming, recording 4K video or using the camera for a long time. The processor is working flat out.
  • You use GPS and mobile data together, for example for car navigation.
  • Signal is poor: the radio raises its power to keep the connection.
  • It’s in the sun or on the car dashboard.
  • You’ve just updated the system: for a few hours the phone reorganises data and photos in the background.

In all these cases, the phone should return to normal temperature shortly after you stop.

What you can do

  • Take the case off while charging or gaming: thick cases act like a coat.
  • Don’t use it while charging if it gets very hot, and avoid charging it under a pillow or on the bed.
  • Check which apps drain the battery (in Settings > Battery). An app consuming a lot in the background also generates heat. Close it, update it or uninstall it.
  • Restart the phone. Sometimes a process gets stuck hogging the processor.
  • Keep the system updated: updates often fix power-consumption bugs.
  • Use quality chargers. A faulty charger can heat the phone and damage its charging circuit.

Signs that it’s a fault

At this point it’s no longer normal and worth checking:

  • It gets hot while idle or with the screen off, with nothing open.
  • It gets hot while switched off. This almost always indicates a short circuit on the board: a power rail is drawing current when it shouldn’t.
  • The heat is concentrated in one spot (next to the camera or the port, for example) rather than across the whole phone.
  • The battery drains very fast while it heats up.
  • The screen is lifting or the back cover separating: it may be a swollen battery. Stop charging it.
  • It smells burnt or keeps restarting because of temperature.

Battery or board: how it’s diagnosed

At the bench, heat is a very useful clue:

  1. Battery: its health and capacity are checked. A degraded or swollen battery heats up more when charging and under load.
  2. Motherboard: a thermal camera shows exactly which component is heating up. A shorted capacitor or a damaged chip shows up as a very specific hot spot. If the short is small, it’s found by injecting a controlled voltage into the affected rail.

Once found, the component is replaced with micro-soldering. It’s one of the faults where board-level repair makes the difference: without it, the only “fix” would be replacing the whole board.

If the phone got wet at some point, even weeks ago, mention it: corrosion is a common cause of shorts that appear later. See what to do if your phone gets wet.

Summary

SituationNormal?
Warm when charging, gaming or using GPSYes
Hot in the sun or in the carYes, but move it away from heat
Hot while idle, nothing openGet it checked
Hot while switched offNo: likely short circuit
Screen lifting or back cover separatingNo: possible swollen battery
